3rd October 2010 - A Walk Through Ainslie Wood

Although the weather forecast was really bad, threatening continuous rain all Sunday afternoon not only did it not rain at all but the sun came out and we even saw some blue sky during our walk in Ainslie Wood yesterday!

It was really a lovely afternoon for a walk when the leaves were starting to turn. It followed on from the walk we did a year ago in Larks Wood. We followed the Nature Trail devised by Friends of Ainsley Wood & Larks Wood and used the booklets which they produce (available in Hale End Library) which tell you exactly what to look for and where. Ainslie Wood and Larks Wood are part of the ancient woodland of Epping Forest and are now under the care and ownership of the London Borough of Waltham Forest.

Around a dozen or so of us met Ron Andrews who is a 'Friend of Ainslie Wood & Larks Wood'. The wood is not that big and without the descriptive booklets the walk would have been over very quickly. As it was Ron spent time pointing out and describing all the interesting different plants and trees. As well as  oak, birch hazel and beech we saw  maple hornbeam elderberry elm and rowan (mountain ash) Of particular interest was the wild service tree. This is not common in Epping Forest generally but in Ainslie and Larks Woods it is quite prolific.

It all made for a most interesting afternoon and we thank Ron and the Friends of Ainslie & Larks Wood for making it possible.

22nd October 2010 - ‘Wine Women and Westminster’ A talk by Political Journalist Chris Moncrieff

Chris Moncrieff has spent his career as a political journalist in and around Westminster. He has known and interviewed all of the most famous names in politics over the last forty years. He has a wealth of stories to tell and he gave us a most entertaining talk. When he retired in 1994 he was political editor of the Press association but continues to write political commentary for the Press Association and regularly appears on political programmes on radio and television. The newly refurbished press gallery bar at the House of Commons has been renamed Moncrieff's in his honour.

Margaret Thatcher, a great admirer, made him a CBE in the New Years Honours List in 1989.

Chris is a local man and lives in Hale End Road. He has written a book about his experiences, and very funny it is too. ‘Wine Women and Westminster’ is obtainable from theBargain Book Shop, 135 Station Road, North Chingford (020 8524 9002)
